Man arrested for stealing remotes from Target
An Apache Junction man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing 13 remote controls from six Target stores.
Peter Maassen, 52, was booked on suspicion of shoplifting and trafficking in stolen property.
Mesa police arrested Maassen after they were contacted by a Target security investigator who had him under investigation.
The investigator told police Maassen entered six Target locations in Gilbert, Mesa, Chandler and Marana from Oct. 13 through Nov. 19 and cut open packages of Universal Remote Control Units, pocketed them and left the stores without paying. The remotes were valued at $2,399.
Security cameras captured several of the thefts, and all were witnessed by loss prevention officers at the stores, according to a police report.
Police arrested Maassen Thursday evening at his home. He told them he repaired remote controls and sold them on eBay. Police found 14 Logitech Harmony remotes listed for auction on his eBay account.
After serving a search warrant on his residence, police recovered 18 of the same type of remote controls.
